Why do my 2 large maple trees behave differently in the fall?
I live in Ohio and I have 2 large maple trees in my yard. It’s November, and we’ve had a couple of hard frosts and some very windy days. One of my maple trees has turned its fall colors and lost most of its leaves. The other tree, just a few yards away, is still heavy with green leaves. What would make my two trees behave differently?
Fall coloration and abscission is a result of shorting daylight, weather and a tree’s genetics. If your two trees are the same variety of maple, then the question needs to be asked if they where propagated via vegetative means (cuttings, etc.) or sexually (seeds). Seed propagated trees will have, just like people, different genetic material from one tree to the next. This is one possibility for the variation. If they where genetically identical (vegetative propagation), then I would look to environmental differences (slope, elevation, water patterns over roots, shade patterns, etc.) such as the previous post has suggested.

Landscaping Tips: How To Prune a tree?
When you have trees on your property, you know that you would love it if they looked their best, but what happens when they are not interested in obliging you? The truth of the matter is that trees do grow fairly wild and due to a number of different issues, they might have a configuration that is displeasing to you. Before you despair, remember that tree pruning is an important tool that you can take on when you are looking fix up your landscaping. What needs to happen when you look at tree pruning and what can you do?
The first thing that you need to consider is the difference between tree pruning and tree trimming. When you prune a tree, you are essentially cutting off fairly major branches. You need to be able to take some time and really consider what your options are going to be, because tree pruning is a fairly intensive event that can have some serious effects on the tree. Tree trimming, on the other hand, is something that is done to the most superficial branches of the tree, and with tree trimming, you are more often trying to keep the tree in the same configuration without changing it drastically.
What are some of the tools that you can use when you are thinking about doing your own tree pruning? The first tool and the one that most people think about is the chainsaw. If you are uncomfortable with a chainsaw, remember that you can still use a pruning saw with a telescopic handle. This is much easier to use and you might find that you feel safer with it as well. A small stepladder might also be a good choice for you.
If you want to do a good job with pruning your tree, remember that you should take it slow and that above all, you should plan. Remember that you should know what branches should be removed and how you can get a neater and more attractive shape in this fashion. Be aware of what the branches look like Are there dead branches or branches that are simply not looking as good? Has an abundance of growth to one side create issues for the rest of the tree? Also keep an eye out for branches that might be looking a bit tired or diseased. Broken limbs, limbs that hang too low or limbs that crisscross might also be candidates for pruning.
When you want to make sure that you are not stripping the bark from the rest of the tree as you cut, remember that you can make a series of cuts before you actually saw off the branch. First, cut halfway through the branch five inches from the trunk. Then make your second cut on the top of the branch and on the outside of the original cut, and then finally make a third cut on the trunk-side of the branch as you saw from top to bottom. This will help you keep your tree looking good.

Are climbing plants good or bad for trees ?
I have tall trees (30 to 50 feet) in my backyard (Maryland, not sure what type of trees) since it touches a small reseve/forest.
Many of them guests climbing plants that goes all the way to the top. Tree’s diameter are about 14 inches and the climbing plants base are 1 to 2 inches.
I was entretaining the idea of taking the climbing planst off by cutting them at the base and waiting for them to dry to help the trees, but not sure if I would be doing good or bad.
Any suggestions ?
Virgina Creeper, honeysuckle, grape vines and ivies, as well as Kudzu and other heavy vines put an undue strain on a tree with their weight alone, and sometimes they twine around the branches so tightly that it literally chokes the life out of them. They also shade the sun out. A tree heavy with vines is not a tree that is going to survive for long, and the vines should definitely be cut and just allowed to dry and fall, if you cannot easily pull them down. Sometimes pulling on them causes more damage to the tree than the vines have already.
You can also get a bottle of brush killer, and paint it on straight on the newly cut vines, with a small paintbrush, to kill them out to the roots so they don’t come back. You can get Brush and Stump KIller at your local nursery. Be sure not to get it on anything you do not want to kill, because it is a plant killer.
