what is the best wood for pyrography?

I am using a woodburning kit to burn letters into wooden frames. I tried using the kit on pine wood but quickly learnt that this was a bad choice as the grain made it very difficult. I have read that sycamore, beech and birch are the best but does it have to be solid beech/birch/sycamore or can it be beech/birch/sycamore effect wood? (solid wood is alot more expensive!)

As you have found out, any wood with a heavy grain pattern is difficult to use. You will most likely find only birch is available as a plywood face and should work if you don’t burn into the substrate. I don’t know if anyone makes beech and sycamore faced plywood.

You may be able to use poplar, bass and alder as well.

or is this even safe to put in a basement? my home is 1700sqt an basement is around 14ft by 16ft how far do i need things away from this so i do not burn anything up..also sence this kit has a damper i can regulate the heat temp right?

you can vent into a chimney as long as it isn’t being used by anything else and has been checked for cracks. otherwise you will have to use a pipe chimney. i would keep anything combustible at least 3 ft away. barrel stoves have very thin walls and get very hot, sometimes red. they work really well but don’t last very long. to thin. your damper will allow you to slow down the burn and sort of regulate the temperature.
