How do I heat my house this coming winter?
We bought a very old home that doesn’t appear to have any insulation. We were using propane hooked up to our existing duct work but it got way to expensive. Then we tried electric heat and we are still paying it off from last year (and we froze!) I would now like to try using a wood or corn pellet burning stove. I can’t seem to find a decent one for under 1500.00 which we don’t have! Winter is right around the corner! I am always looking on ebay and craigslist, but still nothing we can afford. My real question is…Does anyone know where I can find a pellet stove preferably corn stove that just has cosmetic damage? Like a scratch and dent sale or refurbished? I know they do this with other appliances but Ive yet to find a web site or place that does it with heating stoves!
The thing that you really need to do is to insulate the house. You can have rock wool or treated cellulose blown into the walls, either from inside or outside. The upper ceiling or attic should be insulated also. Also, check out the windows: if they are single pane, consider storm windows or replacing the windows with double pane units. My house is insulated with fiberglass, and has double pane windows; when I ran the numbers, it turned out that 10% of the heat was going out the attic, 30% through the walls, ant 60% through the windows. Which suggests that you do something about the windows, even if you do nothing else. As for a heat source, propane or wood pellets are probably most economical; you can install a pellet-burning stove for a reasonable sum of money.

Radiant Heat: Red Hot Retrofit
Red hot as in sales, that is. The reasons behind the increasing popularity of radiant heat panels are ease of installation, quick warm up, dust free heat, and low cost relative to other retrofit heating systems.
For the same price as a pellet stove, you could heat a 1,500 square foot home and not have to deal with locating, storing, and lugging 40 pound bags of wood pellets.
A U.S. Department of Energy sponsored study concluded that radiant heat panels were 52% less expensive to operate than electric baseboard heat and 33% more cost effective air to air heat pumps. The study concluded that “energy savings would be obtainable in a great portion of U.S. households”.
Radiant heat panels manufactured by Enerjoy are about 1 inch thick, and range in size from 2′x2′ to 2′x8′. They are textured to look like the ceiling and can painted to match the room’s décor with quality water based acrylic paint.
The panels operate at 150-170 degrees F. and radiate heat to objects and people in the room. The panel itself reaches operating temperature in only three to five minutes.
Advantages of Radiant Heat Panels
Heat loss from ducts, even insulated ones, reduces the efficiency of forced air systems. Additional leakage is created by the internal air pressure generated by forced air systems. No duct, No pressure, no leakage problems.
Since the need for a blower to circulate heat is eliminated, so is the cost of electricity to the blower motor. Without a blower, there are no filters that need to be replaced.
Heating without moving air also eliminates drafts and prevents dust and pollen from circulating while maintaining the air’s moisture content.
Radiant heat panels require no maintenance or service because there are no moving parts.
With separate thermostats for each room, zoned heating is easy as turning a light switch on and off. Significant energy savings can be realized by allowing only the occupied areas to be heated. The quick response time radiant panels will return an unoccupied room to a comfortable temperature in minutes.
Radiant Heat Panel Applications
Radiant heat panels are an excellent source of heat for bathrooms (no more foggy mirrors), log homes, gazebos, screened in porches and stables. If you’re heating a greenhouse, radiant heat will protect your plants in the absence of sunlight by maintaining root temperatures.
Replacing a wood stove with ceiling mounted panels in auxiliary buildings such as workshops or studios allows the use of all available floor space.
Radiant Heat Panel Installation and Cost
The low amperage requirements for ceiling heat panels can usually be provided by existing 120 or 240 volt circuits. The 30%-70% wattage reduction over electric baseboard heating eliminates the need for dedicated wiring. Wherever a single panel is installed, the existing 120 volt capacity circuit is usually adequate for the additional load.
Installation of radiant heat panels typically cost between $1.25 and $1.50 per square foot of heated space. For a 1,500 sq. ft. house the estimated cost would be $1,900 to $2,300. That’s considerably less than the cost for a complete forced air system.
Disadvantages of Radiant Heat Panels
The major limitation of radiant heat panels is the absence of a cooling function. Installing a ducted central air conditioner would undermine many of the advantages of using radiant panels.
One way around this would be to install a mini-split air conditioning system. The mini-split, like radiant panels, is also a cost effective retrofit solution and can be zoned to cool only occupied rooms.
If controlling heating costs is your primary concern, radiant heat panels offer an easy, cost effective and healthy way to retrofit your home with comfortable, reliable heat.

Benjamin 342 Air Rifle questions?
I know very little about air rifles, please help me determine age and value. I got a nice Benjamin as part of a group of 6 guns I got dirt cheap from an estate sale this weekend.
On the left of the receiver:
Benjamin Franklin ’196***’ Model 342 5.5mm (.22 cal)
–Pellets and Darts–
On the right:
Benjamin Air Rifle Company
There is a very cheap junk Tasco 4×15 scope on it, but the scope mounts look solid and sturdy. Rear factory sight is missing.
Metal is at 95%, wood has some wear and a minor crack (repaired) aft of the receiver. I’d say 80% on the wood, but easily refinished.
It pumps nicely and seems to cock and release pressure, however after shooting the pump handle becomes loose until you pump it one time.
Hi DJ, man long time since I been on here but here it goes:
MODEL 340 SERIES (MODELS 340, 342, AND 347)
- BB/.175 smoothbore, .177 or .22 cal., SS, rifled barrel, similar to Model 310 series but has centrally positioned tang safety, traditional grooved “corn-cob,” checkered, or smooth walnut pump handle. Mfg. 1969-86 (Model 340), and Mfg. 1969-92 (Models 342 and 347).
100%….95%……90%…..80%….60%…40%….20%.
$145…$125…… $115…… $95…….. $70…..N/A…..N/A..
Add 15% for traditional grooved, “corn-cob” pump handle.
Add 10% for Williams peep sight.
Add 10% for 4×15 scope.
Add 10% for box and instruction sheet.
Add 20% for two-piece cocking bolt.
Values on Benjamin models are based on guns in good working order with no missing parts. Guns that have had their finish removed and the brass polished have their value reduced to one half or less of the 90% value.
The Benjamin Air Rifle Company has its roots in the St. Louis Air Rifle Company, founded by Walter Benjamin in 1899. The St. Louis Air Rifle Company produced several unique, but unreliable, air rifles until 1901. Because of low production, and the propensity of these guns to break and become unrepairable, very few specimens of St. Louis air rifles exist today. Sales of these air rifles are too infrequent to establish price levels. Some replicas were produced in the 1990s.
The Benjamin Air Rifle Company was formed in 1902 when Walter Benjamin purchased the patent rights from the defunct St. Louis Air Rifle Company. Production from 1902 to 1904 and from 1906 to 1986 was in St. Louis, MO (extremely limited production of the Single Valve Model ‘B’ by the W.R. Benjamin Company from 1904 to 1906 was in Granite City, IL). Regular production facilities were not established until 1908 when the Benjamin Air Rifle and Manufacturing Company became a wholly owned subsidiary of the Wissler Instrument Co. In 1977, the Benjamin Air Rifle Company purchased Sheridan Products in Racine, WI, and moved production there from 1986 to 1994. In 1991, they started to merge the Benjamin and Sheridan pistol designs, as the pistol models shifted to a Sheridan-type design and were marketed as Benjamin/Sheridan.
There surely will come a time in the future, especially for the Sheridan PB and HB20 models, and the HB17 and HB22 pistols made in WI, where the manufacturing address and markings will be of importance in determining values. The marking of ‘Benjamin Franklin’ on some older models evidently has no significance, except as a marketing ploy.
From about 1935 until recently, Benjamin used a model numbering system for both its air rifles and pistols. Model numbers ending in 0 are smooth bore for lead or steel BBs and .177 caliber pellets or darts; model numbers ending in 7 are rifled for .177 caliber pellets or darts; model numbers ending in 2 are rifled for .22 caliber pellets or darts. To keep things interesting, it is apparent that the ever-frugal A.P. Spack and his son, who ran the company during most of its early history, might not have bothered to change stamping dies when they changed model numbers in their advertisements and bulletins. So a gun advertised and sold as a Model 107 might have come out of the factory stamped as Model 177, etc. Such situations evidently were confined to guns which actually were the same, but were under different model numbers, i.e. apparently no guns were stamped with incorrect numbers. Ref: AAG – July 1991.
Hope this helps some !
Good Luck & Happy Shooting !
